Since work and school have been an absolutely busy experience, trying to pull out rotations is a challenge - even doubly shoo with trying to keep the Old School Wednesdays moving. Let's see if I can keep up with the music this year, which is undoubtedly much more active (and interesting) than it was last year.

I have always been interested in Bah Samba, and have used them on a couple of occasions. After doing some research, I saw that they have been out for more than 10 years, and that one of the vocalists was no other than Alice Russell who is phenomenal both on the turntable and in person. It prompted me to pull out All I've Ever Wanted without hesitation. I've followed this from Dira, a new artist produced by Bluey from Incognito. The track Gotta Get Through To You is off of the CD Something About That Girl. Georg Levin then sets the groove with vocals by the one and only Clara Hill with The Better Life.

Yahzarah's Change Your Mind is a great track which was produced by Nicolay (who incidentally produced the entire LP, The Ballad of Purple St. James). This is followed by Silhouette Brown with a little help from Lady Alma on the track Casualties of Honey. Blue Six follows this up with the bass-thumping You Used To Rock. We then slide into the old school vibe by sliding into the German collaboration by the name of Cool Million with the track Just Dance with Noel McCoy.

I was able to get my hands on Marcell And The Truth and I was very impressed with his LP.. Lost In The Moment is one of my favorite tracks off of the CD. Symbols. Special thanks to L. Michael Gipson got alerting me to this release. Zo! slides in with a track from Sunstorm entitled This Could Be The Night with Erro, Darien Brockington, and Big Pooh. This is followed by PJ Morton's I Need Your Love and Russell Taylor's Mad 1 More Night from the CD Confessional.

Showya. a great track from Darien produced by Soulpersona, is one of the most frequently played tracks by yours truly. This track is followed by Past Present Future by Angel Grant, an artist fro the former Perspective Records (remember Lil' Red Boat?) I found this track while listening to her previous album, aptly entitled Album. The track comes from her current album entitled My Journey Back. Eric Lau then gives us the lovely track Always Will with vocals by Musinah and Kaidi Taitham .

After Eric's track, Incognito follows with vocals by the one and only Chaka Khan with The Song an unquestionably solid track that will be heard for years to come. This is followed by Princess Freesia, an artist to watch out for, with the soulful track Love, which keeps the goodness flowing. I conclude this with a track from Zo!, entitled All Is Well With Love, one of my absolute favorite tracks from the LP. This track is graced by the vocals from Chantae Cann,

Shououts go to Ricky McCarthy, Paul Eversley, Soulpersona, Zo!, and L. Michael Gipson.

01 - Can You Handle It? - Sharon Redd (9:44)
02 - Get Off (You Fascinate Me) - Patrice Rushen (6:20)
03 - Romeo - Jamaica Boys (4:48)
04 - I Could Give You More - Marcus Miller (5:58)
05 - After You - Bernard Wright (4:44)
06 - Hard To Face The Music - Idris Muhammed (4:52)
07 - Inside Your Love - Leon Ware (5:21)
08 - The Sound Of Music - Dayton (5:41)
09 - I Found Lovin' - Fatback Band (4:03)
10 - Knees - Howard Johnson (5:41)
11 - For Tonight - Bryan Loren (4:25)
12 - Hang Tight - Keni Burke (4:00)
13 - I Love You - Weldon Irvine (3:04)
14 - Love The Feeling - Leroy Hutson (2:51)
15 - Lazy Nina - Greg Phillinganes (5:20)

I wanted to start off with Sharon Redd not only because it's a great dance tune, but also because of the instrumental arrangement that stands the test of time. The same can also be said about Patrice's Get Off. After those two tracks, I wanted to get more into Marcus Miller and Bernard Wright, so I thought it would be perfect to drop a good track from the two in addition to including a track from Jamaica Boys, a group they were directly involved in, and which also included Lenny White and Mark Stevens, Yvette's brother. You may know her better as Chaka Khan.

One of the best things about having to hunt for tracks for Old School Wednesdays is learning or learning more about artists, or discovering artists you haven't heard of. Both things mentioned are true in this case. I had enough time to learn more about Idris Muhammad, Greg Phillinganes, and Leon Ware. I did not realize that Leon was not only a writer of Inside Your Love but also incorporated the tune one one of his albums, I had to include it in this mix. Idriis' Hard To Face The Music and Greg's Lazy Nina are two underappreciated classics, that should also be recognized.

There are two artists in this case that I had never heard of which also included this time: Weldon Irvine and Leroy Hutson. I'll be immersing myself into their tracks from them, and there's a good change you'll hear them in the upcoming podcasts. One of the things that I was shocked to learn was Weldon's biography and his involvement in the industry. I was even more astonished to hear more about his death. The realization that he was so prolific really hit home. Information about his life can be found in Colin H. Jackson Jr's writeup, available here.

Great tracks from Dayton, Bryan Loren, Fatback Band, Keni Burke, and Howard Johnson are also here. Howard's track was produced by Jam & Lewis and Monte Moir fan that I had never been able to get my hands on until recently (and considering I am a huge Jan and Lewis fan, this was a minor victory for me.)

Hope you enjoy it. Got requests? Send an email to ejflavors at gmail dot com. For those who'd like to subscribe to these podcasts, enter this link manually into iTunes. Take it light.
I was concerned that I wouldn't have enough time to do anything this week for my birthday. Thanks to Ricky, he was able to drop a nice mix whicih allowed me to focus on other things. While he manages to kill me with the sublime Winjammer track and the never-heard-before tracks from Barbara Mason and Larry Wu. It also doesn't hurt that he placed Stevie, Earth Wind And Fire, and a whole host of others. Good Stuff.
Paul really lit this mix up with a couple of surprises. Pauli Carman, the lead singer for Champaign, is also here for the title track of his debut solo album, Dial My Number. He even managed to mix in Jeff Lorber and Attitude.

Since I was a little tardy with some of the music from 2009, I needed to make up for lost time, so some of these tracks are from last year, but still enjoyable. Starting off with Incognito from the One Nation CD with a track that gave the acid jazz / hose vibe I desperately needed. Soulpersona, with arguably one of the finest albums of 2009, follows up with Princess Freesia's Freestyle.

Dezarray Dawn, who I've had the pleasure of meeting, delivers a great song off of her EP entitled Chameleon. The full album comes out the spring/summer of this year, so stay tuned for its release. I am also anticipating Carmen Rodgers' CD Intermission: The Bitter Suite which is also forthcoming. The first single, Heartless, is a great track.

Ryan Leslie's Is It Real? (a track that I slept on, admittedly), is followed up by Michael Olatuja's Speak! with spoken rhythm ("I don't rap no more, I just speak.") is followed by a track from Deborah Jordan's CD The Light (another awesome CD) with the sublime track Let Go. Jose James' Lay You Done from the forthcoming Blackmagic CD is followed by a track from Phillip Clark entitled aGranted with a superb mix by Groove 7. The vibe continues with Suncircle's When You Speak. This is one of my fasvorite tracks from Reborn.

Kissey Asplund's voice spices up the next track from Kenichiro Nishihara, Life. Corinne Basiley Rae's Feels Like The First Time is then followed up by the nice downtempo track Happy For 5 by Dreemtime's New York Lounge Funk. Sade's track The Moon And The Sky isd then followed by my favorite track from 2009 (and very deserving of their Grammy nomination) from Foreign Exchange entitled Daykeeper, a pefect tracl to end this rotation with.

It's been a little while since I've been able to do this, primarily because of work (we all know how that is), and Old School Wednesdays. I'll make a valiant attempt to do this once a month.

R&B Grammy Awards: The Year In Review

As time approaches for airing the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, the R&B nominations have gaining new ground for being not only tried and true to tradition, but also not afraid to extend the boundaries of the R&B realm into both traditional and alternative styles. While the year, in my humble opinion, was fairly weak in the R&B sector, I am very glad to see that my trepidation was appeased by some really great nominations- even by some acts I was not familiar with. Mainstays like Beyonce are surrounded by both independent and upstarting artists, like Melanie Fiona and Master P on one end and Maxwell, Anthony Hamilton, and Charlie Wilson on the other. A lot has been mentioned about Maxwell's return to the airwaves, which makes him a strong contender in the R&B category. It's also refreshing to see independent artists like Musiq Soulchild, India.Arie, Lalah Hathaway, and Ledisi as nominees. Acts which are relatively new in this sector- Master P, Melanie Fiona, and Jasmin Sullivan provide a balancing act between themselves and the seasoned nominees. Although there seems to be a quite a bit of debate on the above nominations, discussions regarding the Traditional R&B category. Ann Nesby and Calvin Richardson have double nominations, but Beyonce and Anthony Hamilton are also nominees in this category, demonstrating their versatility, which makes those nominations interesting. Although there are duplicate nominations in most of the categories, which can make the nominations appear to be somewhat concentrated on a core of artists, The Urban/Alternative stands out in it's dedication to independent artists and concentrates not only on soul, but jazz as well, which makes it invigorating. India.Arie and Dobert Gnahorsa, who represent two nations, and Robert Glasper and Bilal, representing both the jazz consortium and the neo-soiul= vibe make this a very dynamic category. To put icing on the proverbial cake, Tonex, Eric Roberson and The Foreign Exhange make this category even more intriguing, in particular since they are very strong independent artists. In retrospect, at the onset of 2009, it seemed that R&B would not have a very strong year. I'm very glad to say that my mind has been changed for the better. Hats off to 2009, and good luck to all the nominees....
