It's "European Invasion" time at OSW! Nice, very nice but... "What? No Boy George & Culture Club?!" I've had "Miss Me Blind" running through my head for weeks now. (Yeah, OK, I admit it... always liked that group for some reason)
BTW, I had big fun making the podcast of the Xquizzyt1's mix. Fell in love with it at first sight and I just had to mix it down and make it available for download. Been listening to it non-stop for a few days now.
Props on the site redesign too, Mr. Flavors, looks real good (but "damn you", now you got me thinking about doing the same to my site. Where am I supposed to find the time for that! {smile})

@James - I knew you would like it!
@Nikki: half of my day is done already. It was well worth the prep time to do it.
@TGrundy: With you as my QA team you know I can't go wrong. Thanks for the shoutout. No need for the shotgun I guess? *ducks*

The O'Jays, EJ? How did you know that I so needed to hear this? Thanks to you both!

Oh...I didn't see "Sara Smile". Awesome.

(Thierno on

EJ, I love the new look; I couldn't see it very well from work but I can see it now that I'm home. Nice mix. Wang Chung... WOW! Takes me way back. Wasn't the video for this song one of the first ones to be banned in the UK for fear that it would cause seizures? They had a couple of good songs. Thanks for adding the Beautiful & graceful Sade.

Peace.

EJ! Thank you so much for the shout out *YAY*! I LOVE Human League's Fascination! That's wsup for real. Kudos for The Thompson Twins "Lies", that's my favorite song from that group. She Blinded Me With Science still sounds as fresh as it did when it came out.

Decisions, decisions. Which list should should I listen too first?

I definitely have something to listen to when I clean up later today...a hot ass Louisiana day at that.

Nice job dude.

OSW - The Remix: Warmth, Volume II

The revamp of 12/04/05. Enjoy

There's been lots of things going on during the past week, so let me get you up to speed instead of just dropping the OSWs. First, I hung out in Chicago for my birthday, which was absolutely wonderful. I met some good people and ate and drank enough for quite a few vacations. Now that the wonderul days have passed, I've had to make up for this time and basically work more than 50 hours week for the next 6 months. Things are going to get a little tough, that's for sure, but it's going to be worth it. As a matter of fact, I'm just finally putting the podcast and Theresa's spin on the tunes on the Yay Area Mix, so check it out.

Another thing that's been going on is that this has finally been the week that I've grown absolutely tired of some of the quirky things going on on my site. Some comments won't make it, and I've been having to approve valid comments. For this reason, I'm going to do a revamp of the website. I want to try to make some of the changes relatively soon, but some of the OSWs may not be able to be done quickly, like one for this week.

What I've done is decided to pull some of the mixes back before podcasts were being done on this site, and from time to time mix them to make up for not being able to come up with OSWs in time. This will help with keeping the continuity going. There will be a new one next week, so don't worry - I've got it covered for the next two OSWs. If there are any other OSW that you're waiting on podcasts for, let me know, and I'll make sure to put those in the top of the list. This week's podcast comes from December 14th, 2005. I've renamed it:

01 - Raydio - Jack And Jill
02 - Earth, Wind & Fire - Star
03 - Chicago - Street Player (Dance Mix)
04 - Sister Sledge - He's The Greatest Dancer
05 - L.T.D. - Holding On (When Love Is Gone)
06 - Electric Light Orchestra - Evil Woman
07 - The Isley Brothers - Voyage to Atlantis
08 - Everything But the Girl - Driving
09 - Heatwave - The Star of The Story
10 - Boz Scaggs - Jojo
11 - Steely Dan - Black Cow
12 - Meli'sa Morgan - Fool's Paradise
13 - Portrait - Heartstrings
14 - RJ's Latest Arrival - Heaven In Your Arms

I'm sure it's been a while since you've heard Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, and Everything But The Girl. Here's the kicker though - remember the house cut that sampled Street Player?

Enjoy, and again, if there's anything else you're looking for, let me know. Take it light, and thanks for your patience.
It's all good Man. Good stuff comes to those who wait and you have been hitting us with some good tunes! It's good to see Raydio Sister Sledge, Boz and Steely on the mix. Keep it coming.

I'm seeing visions of Lindsay Wagner and Lynda Carter from those 70's cuts!

Oh, for one of your future mixes..If you ever have time or even think it's a good mix to do, could you do a "heartbeat props" mix of Leon Sylvers produced cuts?

P.S. I do remeber a House Joint that sampled Chicago. I forget the year...early to mid 90's I think.

Keep it going Maestro!

Mann you put on two of my favorate late night cutz for crusing. "Voyage to Atlantis" and "Star of the Story" just puts me in another place.

If you can make this mix into a podcast, it will be all over. I'm back to pop-locking in the H S. lunchroom.

Oh yes EJ..I know the house cut you are referring to...it's The Bomb by The Bucketheads. I had the video as one of my Friday Flashback Jams on my blog a few weeks ago. I consider myself a Chicago fan and never heard that song before, I'm loving it and I must get a copy of it!

I appreciate your love for Steely Dan too, I think I'm the world's biggest SD fan...my admiration for Walter and Donald is serious.

This was a fantastic OSW as they all are. Thank you for the music.

EJ, love the old skool. Please check your e-mail. I need your help on a song I'm trying to find and also I'd like to know if you have Parris' song "Can't Let Go?" Thanks!

Okay - Star of the Story is my SHYT!!! And I'm really mad that you dug Portrait out from behind and up under... (so funny because I just downloaded most of their CD onto my iPod and have been jamming to "Precious Moments,") and I ADORE "Heaven in Your Arms," that's on my iPod's old school playlist, and I just sing and get happy when I hear it. =))) I'm happy to see Michael Cooper on here, I remember being in LOVE LOVE LOVE with his song "Over and Over," and being SHOCKED when I was able to find it on Cassingle. YES, I said CASSingle. LOL Lawd, do you realize there are some "kids" on here who have no idea what a "cassingle" is? LMAO

Thanks to Theresa's knowlege, I was able to come up with this list. What did she have to say? Well, read on:

First, Props to EJ for allowing me to contribute on a long-standing “sacred” tradition – OSW. Thank you Mr 31 Flavors! This weeks collection of Yay Area music is especially close to my heart and I’ll tell you why. In some way, shape or form, I know most of these folks! And these songs hold a personal significance for me.

Sly & The Family Stone: Everyday People: We start it off with a dude who used to DJ for KDIA and was let go for playing all his own music! Mr Sly Stone himself – wow the Blonde Mohawk and silver suit at the 2006 Grammys was, well…. interesting…..I really like this tune and the Grammy folks sure let him be himself though KDIA did not! This tune just flat makes me happy.
Tower of Power: – “Aint nothing I can say, nothing I can do….” This is a song of conviction - LOVE IT!!– I think the Incognito folks were taking notes from ToP.
Pointer Sisters – He’s so shy – Why do I have a vision of Isaac from Love Boat on this one. Did y’all see that episode? This isn’t my fav PS tune but they did their thang as always. We move on to:
ConFunkShun – Michael Cooper and Felton Pilate are great guys. Who can deny the power of the music that came from them? I met Michael when he came to King Jay records to do the “Prove My Love” project. He has always been that “uncle” figure that you stay in awe of – The signature of the early Foster/McElroy sound is SUPA strong on this cut – Big ups to Mike holdin it down on this one. Hated the album cover!
Aah...
Club Nouveau…Jay King singing in the verse – Lawd…nuff said. Well this song has an interesting history since Michael Marshall used it in his production of “I Got 5 on it” – seceret message there? I’ll leave it at that.
Broken Puzzle!!!! Ha! I love this song! It is one of the best on the album - very well produced. Theresa sure does sang this heartbreak song – Didja know this song had a third verse that never made it onto the album? – sigh….Lyrics written By Valarie Watson of Club Nouveau.
LaRue – There’s Love Out There – only thing missing from this song? My girl Jaquie LaRue singing in it. AAAAAHHH! Channel 2 – these kids could sing – what happened? I do love this tune, though not so classic Denny & Tommy.
EnVouge – The baddest chick group in a while – I LIKE this song – is this the first time a female covered that Michael Jackson piece? DR Soul, Tommy was the Master impressionist – I loved that about him; such a funny guy. These guys will always be dear to me. Diggin Mc Lyte on the rap!
The Underground – Digital, that is. Shimme, Shimme, coco pop- What is Chocolate Crossover? I soooo dig this song - except for the physical abuse part. Hahahaha! Something about Q-tip on this is nice.
The Tony’s as they are called here – This was so the bomb album! These guys took it up a notch on this production effort. Hats off!
Pebbles – still I like her faster cuts better – but this was aiight.
Miss Rosie Gaines – a master vocalist – her voice is like an instrument. I love seeing her live. She is such a nice lady she has this mesmerizing aura…she’s amazing! Go to her website so you can hear her sing “Welcome to my website! Its muy cool! www.rosiegaines.com.

Take it light!

[Note - if you leave a comment, don't worry, I'll get to approving it - working on getting the kinks out for you to see them as soon as you leave them, so don't sweat it.]

Hey E! First off...Happy Birthday!! (Belated) Make it a month long celebration, Man!

Good stuff here, Man. Channel 2 - I think this team (Bros. and Sister I believe) did a track in '88 called In Debt To You. Good track..funny/good vid too...If I remeber correctly it had John Canaa Terrell in it from Spike Lee's "She's Gotta Have It."

The vid showed the Bro./Sister as they grew up taking care of each other and having each others back. Well once they are older the John Canada character thinks he can "push up" hard on ole Sis..but Big Bro was right there..holding J Canada by the neck and kicked him out the house.

Always good to hear Confunkshun and Tower Of Power..The Poiter Sisters..Wow. I did not know they were from Oaktown!
Funny. i sit back here late nights in NYC..or afternoons depending if the show is pre-empted by Baseball, watching the Soul Train Classics and Don Cornelius mentioned Tower Of Power on last weeks episode. Yeah, this is cool. My Mom and my Grandparents always watched Soul Train...Not just to entertain my brothers and I but b/c they enjoyed the music as well.

Good trip down the ole lane o' memory...Good to hear some care free Rap too....a group I miss. Digital Underground!!!! LOOOVED Kiss You Back....I remember that old B/W Video too..and a much happier Tupac. I always found it interesting how he never had anything bad to say about them and vice versa..I got the impression they REALLY liked each other and did not want D.U. to hinder his (Tupac) growth. I never hear them talking about him at every turn, living off of him. I miss that group..(Loved "Dowhutyalike"..song and vid too!)

Whew! Apologies about the ramble, Man. Always a good party here! A virtual time and party machine! Music and Memories.

Hi EJ. Hope all is well. Been kinda busy but I never forget to check in on the OSWs. This week's installment keeps up with the tradition. That Pebbles track is one of my favorites from her. The sounds is so fresh and that guitar Solo by Babyface is just classic.

Cheers

The story goes like this: I had gotten another CD from a group back in the day and had been playing them and coming up with this week's OSW. While I was coming up with the tracklist, I did a check for a duo named Theresa who had a slammin' single back in the day called Last Time. The track was a very popular track in 1987-1988 and was played in the rollerskating rinks and on the radio, and the video was in rotation BET. The duo's name was Theresa, consisting of Theresa King and Victor Porter. I remembered them because I had purchased two copies of their cassette, Broken Puzzle.

While my initial searches to find this kept turning up empty, I kept looking. After a couple of months of searching, I finally found a match- there was a reference of the album on MySpace. After a couple of messages later, not only was I able get a couple of tracks from the album, but I was also able to communicate directly with Theresa who had a request for this mix. I was glad to provide. She made my job extremely easy.

I know you remember these tracks from back in the day. I'm sure they will jog your memory. She's caused me to pull out songs I haven't heard in years. In fact, the next mixes that you'll hear this month are already on their way to being set up, thanks to her musical knowledge, so definitely stay tuned.

Take it light!

[Note - if you leave a comment, don't worry, I'll get to approving it - working on getting the kinks out for you to see them as soon as you leave them, so don't sweat it.]

It's the 4th, it's warm. Celebrate with: Sun, Central Line, Heatwave, Grover, Jazzy & The Prince, Deee-Lite, TaMara, Leo's Sunshipp, Ramsey, Kool, Rick, The Real Thing, Stevie, Teena, Phyllis, Lenny White, and Chic.

01 - Sun - Sun Is Here
02 - Central Line - Walking Into Sunshine
03 - Heatwave - Send Out For Sunshine
04 - Grover Washington, Jr. - Summer Song
05 - Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince - Summertime
06 - Deee-Lite - Picnic In The Summertime
07 - TaMara And The Seen - Summertime Love
08 - Leo's Sunshipp - Give Me The Sunshine
09 - Ramsey Lewis - Sun Goddess
10 - Kool & the Gang - Summer Madness
11 - Rick James - Summer Love
12 - Real Thing - Rainin' Through My Sunshine
13 - Stevie Wonder - Summer Soft
14 - Teena Marie - Sunny Skies
15 - Phyllis Hyman - The Sunshine In My Life
16 - Twennynine & Lenny White - Morning Sunrise
17 - Chic - A Warm Summer Night

THe more Todd and I talked about summer songs, the easier it was to come up with some classic that emphasized the summer. We've got some songs that bring back memories, like Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince's Summertime and of course Heatwave's Send Out For Sunshine, there's even more stuff that I hadn't heard in a good while, like Teena's Sunny Skies, Chic's A Warm Summer Night, and Stevie's Summer Soft. While I was granted the great start-off track Sun Is Here by JRK, Todd jumped in and provided this wonderful track from Grover Washington Jr, Summer Song.

Along with two of the greatest instrumentals ever made (remember Sun Goddess and Summer Madness? Sure you do), Twennynine, Central Line, and Deee-Lite keep the pace and give something for everyone, while Phyllis, Real Thing, Rick James and Leo mellow you out as only they can.

I think the three songs that stand out to me the most are the Grover Washington, Jr. track for its nice buildup and the instrumentals from Kool and the Gang and Ramsay Lewis that constantly remind me how those days were. Happy Independance day to all! Take it light!
Now, I have to admit, I couldn't roller skate worth a damn. But I always went when asked 'cause the music was off da' hook. I remember a lot of these from those skating (or in my case, non-skating {smile}) days. This is a real nice mix that has "summertime" written all over it!

Hot to Death!!! Luv that Ol Skool! Taking it back to Skate Key...

...and do you remember the outdoor "Jams" in the abandoned lots and parking lots in all five boroughs. Dudes used to unhook the wires from the lightpost, hook up two turntables, speakers, a mixer, a fan and their mother's kitchen lamp on a table and mix on vinyl for a few hours... We'd all dance, party and then we would go home. Dude would unhook the electronics and put the street light back! We would go back to our various blocks... no one got shot, no one beefed, the most violent crime was pickpocketing or maybe the local weed man with a group discount...

I cant even imagine that happening today, between the flood of guns in the hood and the terrorist threats, young people cant gather safely anywhere in a large group anymore... except maybe on line, and then you gotta watch out for the Dateline Types. Oh Well.

Thanks for bringing back the good memories!

Me and my girls had the hottest skating routine to Rock Skate Roll Bounce. Me with my white boots/blue wheels, Leese with the same, Cookie with the white boot/red wheels, Tray with the white boot/purple wheels with the sparkles...you couldn't tell us shit. "Bounce" we hopped and then kinda bounced in that groove, "Rock" we shook our hips from side to side, and "Skate" demanded that we kick back with our left foot to accelerate a bit 1, 2, 3, 4, "Roll"...we rode the acceleration and laid back into the groove, and shimmied back a bit...and started it all over again. Too friggin cute, ya heard? Couldn't TELL us nothing!

At first, when I started designing an OSW, I thought I would start out with a nice post-disco mix, but a friend of mine from Chicago, DJ, suggested (rather surreptitiously, I might add) that I do a mix with Incognito. At first I shrugged at the thought, believing that they they didn't have enough material to fulfill the OSW requirement. I was seriously mistaken. Upon closer inspection, I discovered that they had quite a bit of material before 1997. It was on!

I started asking friends what their favorite cuts were. James, the man behind J-Notes, asked about Inside Life, one of their first CDs, which is why Always There is the first cut in the mix. Among the acid jazz playlists I put together, Tribes, Vibes and Scribes was being played heavily while I was searching for more songs, which is why Change and I Love What You Do For Me were picked. It was all about the remake of Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing that made me take notice of the group. As I noticed, I wasn't alone.

As expected, the CD Positivity was the favorite among all the people I taked to, with the warm Still A Friend of Mine and the introspective Deep Waters being the two cuts that were on everyone's request list. Givin' It Up and Step Into My Life were tunes that I hear among clubs everywhere, "Step" being one of my all-time favorites, with Maysa's wonderful scats which would become her signature.

During 100 and Rising, Maysa went to pursue her solo career, which introduced Pamela Anderson-Lee (cousin of Jhelisa and Carleen Anderson) and Joy Malcolm. The same vibes present during the previous two CDs were present in this one as well, with Where Did We Go Wrong and Good Love starting out the album. Spellbound and Speechless is also a personal favorite of mine, having been used on OSW a couple of months ago.

During my time on the west coast, Beneath The Surface was released, signalling the return of Maysa to the fold. All That You Want Me To Be was the extra track on the CD that I kept playing continuously. Hold On To Me was another standout on the album, as was Labour of Love, sung by Chris Ballin.

Finally, I had to add tracks from the CD No Time Like The Future. I had to play Centre of the Sun, the melancholy love track and counter it with the great remake of Nights Over Egypt sung beautifully by Jocelyn and Maysa, and also add Marrakech, which gets us ready for the instrumentals to close out the set, Magnetic Ocean and Barumba.

Special thanks to the trio from Chicago, along with the music maestros T. Grundy, Todd Kelley and J-Notes for adding their thoughts into this OSW. Take it light.

Ahhhh... the OSW just keeps better with time. This is such a nice mix. After the unexpected "vaction" last week due to some technical glitches, EJ comes back with a BANG! Right from the start with "Always There" to "Deep Waters", a nicely uptempo version of "Nights Over Egypt" (who did the original?; can't remember at this moment) all the way to the end, this mix is certifiably "good shyt!" I gonna end up playing this one over and over again for days.

BTW EJ, you know you got into my head yesterday and now I just have to start off tomorrow's TPTD with '"T" Plays It Cool'. After you mentioned it nothing else sounded just quite right to kick off the mix with {smile}.

A breath of fresh air Man! Love this music. Music coming from this crowd and their contemporaries on labels such as Naked Music always put me in a good mood. Similar to how the dance music (and rap music such as Man Parrish..I saw that Hip Hop Be Bop posted in the crates. Yes!) from the 80's. Kinda' always puts me in a Dhar Braxton, Ten City, Nocera-ish,type of mood.

If this makes sense even the contemporary nostalgia gives me nostalgia..and that's a good thing!

Ditto to what the post said above on Nights Over Egypt. They did The Jones Girls proud.

Play on, E!

EJ,

Just wanted to thank you for putting this music out there. I just discovered your site and I want to give you props on your mixes. The Incognito mix is the first one that I've commented on, but I've heard several others and they are all good. This one in particular I love not just because I love Incognito, but Maysa is one of my favorite singers and I never get tired of hearing her sing these songs or her solo stuff.

Keep on, rockin' on...

01 - Shaun Escoffery - Days Like This (Danny Dee Main Mix)
02 - Miguel Migs - Shake It Up
03 - Ananda Project - Into The Sunrise
04 - Ernesto - Held
05 - Wade O. Brown - All Night, All Love
06 - Raw Artistic Soul - Zaab (Main Mix)
07 - The Brand New Heavies - Let's Do It Again
08 - Nicole Willis - Didn't Feel No Pain
09 - ISoul8 - Give It Up (Featuring Valerie Etienne)
10 - Santessa - Irresistible
11 - Nate James - Back To You
12 - Nick Clow - Don'tcha Know
13 - Nagaraj (Tajh) - Most Beautiful Soul
14 - Carl Thomas feat. Lalah Hathaway - Thought You Should Know

Shaun Escoffery is one of the most underrated singers out there these days. Thanks to Oyster Music's Om 1...This is Oyster Music, you get to hear great tracks from him and Nick Clow in this mix. Miguel Migs' Those Things is still in serious rotation. I am pleased to say that Ernesto is out with this third CD, Find The Form. I was very impressed by his last album and his cuts done with Beanfield. Wade O. Brown's underrated second album, All Night, All Love is represented here with the title cut.

Raw Artistic Soul's Zaab follows up in this mix, along with the Brand New Heavies and Nicole Willis, leading up to ISoul8's wonderful cut with Valerie Etienne's vocals. With those cuts, it was only fitting to put in some Santessa (anxiously awaiting a new album from her) and another track from Nate James' Kingdom Falls.

Remember The Boys? Well, they're back as The Suns Of Light and Jajh
has an album called Ancient Ways that has an awesome cut called Most Beautiful Soul that I had to include here since I've been playing it so much lately, and I had to finish this off with Carl Thomas' cut with the wonderful Lalah Hathaway Thought You Should Know.

Thanks for your patience, and I hope you enjoy this one. Take it light.
As I listened through the discography of Hi-Five and Tony Thompson, I realized how much I missed the songs like Quality Time, I Wanna Love Like That and Fly Away.
What I had totally not realized were songs written by Babyface (Dance With Me), songs written by Mary J. Blige and Faith (I Know), oldies he complimented (the awesome remake of My Cherie Amour). Tony was a great vocalist and he will be missed. Special thanks to Trent for his tribute to this man. Definitely on point.
Two more podcasts will be posted here in the next 24 hours. Watch for them. Until then, take it light.

Great tribute EJ. A great way to pay homage to those who have passed. I Like The Way and Unconditional Love. Wonderful Music.

Thanks for the music Tony T. God Bless.

Let me also give respect to another artist Curtis Hairston who sang on The BB And Q Band's albums and had his own solo career with the hit song "I Want You (All Tonight)." I recently found out he had passed back in 1996. I also did not know that Luther Vandross had sung as back up on his recordings. This was a time I did not pay too much attention to all the credits.

Music, arts..it's all a gift and blessing. We should all be honored
to have heard these artist' music and if we haven't heard it, appreciate what we have heard and the opportunity to being introduced to it. I know I am.

God Bless the Artists and all you here on EJ Flavors.

EJ: While it's never a pleasant situation when one of our music artists passes away (especially at such a young age), I must commend you on the "tribute" mixes that you produce when one of these situations inevitably occurs. You always seem to be able to capture the essence of the person and remind us of the legacy of music they have left behind. Job (as usual) well done!

Wow, that is some really sad news, and so young. I remember this group as if they were out yesterday. First it was my boy Kenny from Intro who passed quite a few years ago, now Tony Thompson.

I want to send my condolences to his family and friends. Thanks EJ for putting this together.

EJ, this is a great tribute. This OSW truly demonstrates how unfortunate it is when a life is cut too short. Such a promising talent. I'm glad he left us a few good tunes to remember him by. RIP.

Cheers

Que pasa, EJ? Just passing through for my OSW fix. It's been a while....

I like Hi-Five, too....and had forgotten about much of the music they came with. Thanks for posting this remembrance.

Wow... this is really sad.

His remake of "My Cherie Amour" deserved a wider audience. It still sounds terrific.

"I Like the Way (The Kissing Game)" always reminds me of being a teenager and in love for the first time. It captures the innocence, excitement, and mystery of that first love. That song always stirs great memories and feelings.

Excellent tribute to an underrated singer.

Thank you for you tribute and thank you for this website! I came across you by accident but now you are in My Favorites. There was one mix you did with IOU, Beat Box and Man Parrish, Latoya, Dear Yvette and Sally that had folks jumping in three states! I forwarded it to all my friends in the old skool (old folks) set
Thanks again!

Thanks for the memories Sweet Heart. Tony has a unique voice like no other. Can you compare his voice to anyone else? I bet you can't. You will be missed but not forgotten. One of Hi-five's number 1 fans straight out of Canada. RIP Tony(I love you angel).

Maaaaaa----aaannnn. High School al over again. Keith Sweat and Al B. Daaaaa-aaaag!!! Funny. People always said Al could not sing in comparison to others but I totally dug the synthetic stylings of the vocals on his early works. Anybody know what happened to the team of Al B and his cousin Kyle West?

The were to me a great team..Al's lyrics and Kyle's music. Everyone knows the Tevin Campbell material they produced together and The Gyrlz (I saw Monica In Brooklyn, NY) a year ago. STILL beautiful! The jump for me ws the tune "I've Waited
Too Long" by a singer named Cheyanne.....TOTAL CLUB BANGER!!!!

Thanks for the trip EJ!!!!!!

OSW: Thinking About Your Love

I've been listening to so much new stuff, it was hard for me to concentrate and come up with this. I started with two ideas but I shelved them and came up with this in the 11th hour.

Old School Wednesday: Thinking About Your Love.

Podcast/mix available here. [Click to play or right click-save as to download.]

01 - Skipworth & Turner - Thinking About Your Love
02 - The System - You Are In My System
03 - Howard Johnson - So Fine
04 - Mac Band - I Could Never Say Goodbye
05 - Michael Jeffries - I'm Waiting
06 - S.O.S. Band - The Finest
07 - Bryan Loren - Lollipop Luv
08 - Kenny Loggins - This Is It
09 - The Whispers - In The Mood
10 - Shalamar - I Can Make You Feel Good
11 - Don Blackman - Holding You, Loving You
12 - George Duke - Just For You
13 - Teena Marie - Irons in the Fire
14 - Howard Huntsberry - Married Men Get Lonely Too

The one song that I absolutely had to put in this mix is Thinking About Your Love. When I heard this cut recently, I almost ran off the road. I hadn't heard it in more than 15 years. The System, Howard Johnson, Bryan Loren, and Shalamar stick out in my mind as cuts I would hear in clubs. The Mac Band had some really good cuts from their Luv U 2 The Limit CD, as I Could Never Say Goodbye demonstrates, with it's homage to Cameo. Michael Jeffries' cut is followed by SOS Band, it's because they're both cuts which have background vocals from no other than Lisa Keith. Two songs that we always grooved to (but rarely admitted) were Kenny's This Is It, and of course the ultimately mellow In The Mood by The Whispers. Don Blackman, George Duke, Teena Marie and Howard Huntsberry round out the mix with their stellar smooth moves.

Special thanks to
JC for looking out for the acid jazz podcasts (which are now working and are downloadable), and Zuri for reminding me about Howard Huntsberry.

Take it light.

Hi EJ. You know it's always a good day when I hear a System tune, being a true System FANATIC!!!! Then you add Kashif to the mix (with Howard Johnson); Bryan Loren... We're deep in Electro Soul here.

Thanks.

You did it again!

The System track never gets old. But man, "So Fine"!!! I haven't heard that in years. Love it!!!. I was a little weary of the Kenny Loggins track, but after a few seconds, IT FIT! How you figured that ish, i'll never know!!! And finishing ish up with Teena just put me away. Can't wait for the podcast to throw im my collection.

Peace, Blackman.

BEEFCAKE!!!!!

You threw me a curve when I first read the title "Thinking About Your Love" and had me thinking that this was going to be a slow, mellow groove mix. Then I heard the first notes of Skipworth & Turner; oh yeah, now I know what you were hinting at the other day. I haven't heard this jam in years! Definitely remember partying to this one back in the day.

As I was listening to the mix while getting ready for work this morning I was thinking... you know this mix is a perfect example of what we've all come to know as the "EJFlavors sound". You start us off with an uptempo groove and carry that through for the first part of the mix, blend in a bit of soft rock and/or blue-eyed soul, ever so smoothly transition the tempo down a notch or two and then take us out with a few melodic cuts of jazz and/or love ballads. Nice. Very, very nice. I think this mix has a firm place in my Top 5 all-time favorite EJ mixes.

Skipworth and Turner ROCKS!!! I always loved this song. What year was this about 84-85..Good times Indeed! Kenny Loggins!?!? GREAT!! So Fine is the JUMP!!!!

They say digital don't wear and tear like analog...let me know tho'..cuz I'm about to test the theory with these here trax!!!!!!

This is music for a Spring Day.

Many, many thanks BUDDY!!!!!!!!
